A few years ago, I was interviewed by a German TV channel which wanted to show that taking over the counter drugs was a dangerous practice, and had gone to great pains to do some secret filming in South Korea. I was very unhappy with the way things were going in the business, and felt that the company had no businessotonining my film.
The story of their business in South Korea is like that of many of their counterparts in the European drug business. They were selling an over-the-counter drug called Viagra, and had turned me in to a doctor after I complained about the way the doctors treated me. As a result, my supply of the drug was cut off in several European countries, and the drugs suddenly became restricted under the drug laws.
The drug companies immediately threatened to sue the South Korean regulators who approved the drug, and the South Korean authorities immediately made them aware of the drug's restricted status. These countries, along with the United States, Canada and other Western nations, have also banned the sale of Viagra in South Korea, and are now requiring drug companies to tell drugmakers that they are allowed to sell the drug without a prescription.
What happened is that the drug companies in South Korea are trying to keep you on the drug-making track by restricting what they sell, without even telling you they are allowed to sell it. Suddenly, you begin to wonder, Is this a allowed behaviour? Is this a dangerous practice?
In my view, the answer to that yes and no is very difficult to determine, and I think it is still true today that South Korean drug sales are very dangerous. South Korean drug sales have been increasing steadily over the last few years, and have risen steadily every year since the 1990s, and recent years. South Korean drug sales are therefore potentially dangerous.
By contrast, my film, which is based on the real story of a Korean man who was caught in the South Koreanmba (Pharmaceutical Promotion Unit) in 1988, tells the real South Korean story, and features a drug company which makes Viagra, who say they want to keep you on the drug. The real story is different, however, and is much different from the story of my own business. Viagra is one of the most counterfeited drugs in the world, and counterfeiting is a serious issue in many countries, with many of the most dangerous drugs coming from foreign countries, such as Nigeria and India.
The world has become more aware of counterfeiting, and the problem is more prevalent in South Korea. In 1998, for example, there were nearly 500,000 instances of fake drugs being sold daily in the country, and counterfeiting is a serious issue in many countries.
